What is the Difference?
In British Columbia, the Class 4 commercial license is divided into two distinct categories: Restricted and Unrestricted. The primary difference lies in the maximum number of passengers you are authorized to transport.
Class 4 Restricted
- Passenger Limit: Max 10 occupants (including driver).
- Common Jobs: Uber, Lyft, Taxis, Limousines, Ambulances.
- Eligible Vehicles: Standard sedans, SUVs, and small multi-purpose vans.
Class 4 Unrestricted
- Passenger Limit: Max 25 occupants (including driver).
- Common Jobs: School buses, regional shuttles, HandyDART, utility vans.
- Eligible Vehicles: Small shuttle buses and larger transport vans.
Which License Type Should You Choose?
If you plan to drive for ride-sharing platforms like Uber or Lyft, or want to drive a taxi, the Class 4 Restricted license meets the minimum regulatory requirements and is the standard path.
If you want broader career opportunities—such as driving community shuttle buses, HandyDART, or special activity vehicles—you will need the Class 4 Unrestricted license. Note that the practical road test for the unrestricted class must be taken in a commercial passenger vehicle with a seating capacity of 11 to 25 occupants.
Common Prerequisites for Both Classes
Regardless of the class you choose, applicants must meet the following ICBC prerequisites:
- Be at least 19 years old.
- Hold a valid Class 5 or 6 license (or provincial equivalent).
- Have a clean driving record (fewer than 4 penalty points in the last 2 years).
- No motor vehicle-related Criminal Code convictions in the last 3 years.
- Pass a commercial Driver's Medical Examination.
